What is GFRC?
GFRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete) is a high-performance form of concrete reinforced with alkali-resistant glass fibres. It combines the strength and natural character of concrete with greater flexibility and a lighter finished weight, making it particularly well suited to refined architectural pieces such as concrete basins.
Unlike traditional concrete, GFRC is a composite material made from Portland cement, fine aggregate, water, acrylic polymer, alkali-resistant glass fibre reinforcement, additives and pigments. The glass fibres reinforce the material in much the same way steel reinforcement strengthens conventional concrete, helping create significantly higher flexural and tensile strength.
Why does Consculpt use GFRC for concrete basins?
GFRC allows us to create thinner, lighter and more sculptural forms without losing the strength and substance that make concrete so distinctive. This gives us greater freedom to shape curves, fluting and refined profiles that would be difficult to achieve using traditional concrete.
For a bathroom basin, that combination is particularly valuable. GFRC provides the durability required for everyday use while allowing the finished piece to feel considered and architectural rather than unnecessarily heavy or bulky.
Strong, lightweight and versatile
The high strength-to-weight ratio of GFRC means it can be cast in relatively thin sections while remaining strong and durable. It can also be formed into a wide variety of shapes, colours and textures, giving designers and homeowners greater freedom when selecting a basin for a contemporary bathroom or powder room.
